The first and so far only negative reaction to reducing plastic bag use was that people need them as bin liners. This of course throws up alll sorts of questions like "are supermarkets unfairly competing with bin liner manufacturers by giving them away for free?" and "does NZ really need a billion not particularly well designed bin liners?". When we checked our email this morning we were stoked to see one of our new members has researched a possible alternative:

Hello.

I signed up last week with Angus on Ardmore Street in Wanaka and knew that the challenge would be finding a bin liner.  I researched the issue online and this is the best alternative I could find.  The town of Barrie, outside Toronto in Canada. has this pdf file on their website to help people fold a newspaper liner.  If you add this to your website, more of us will be willing to give up our plastic bags as bin liners.  Purchasing biodegradable bin liners is costly enough that many will not take that route.  Since we are changing habits of a lifetime (for me 60 years) we need to offer some assistance for those trying to make the first step.

Have a look and maybe add it to your website.  I am folding newspaper and pleased with the result!  I just can’t bear the mess, smell and lack of hygiene with putting garbage straight into the bin.

You can find the instructions here.

Thanks.
